Lions And Zoos

When are visitors allowed to return?

After a visit Thursday by USDA inspectors, the Utica Zoo is preparing to reopen.

“We’ve passed inspection…the zoo will be open tomorrow,” Utica Zoo executive director Andrea Heath told WIBX 950 Thursday afternoon.

The zoo has been closed since Sunday and was awaiting USDA inspection. Heath told WIBX 950 there was a scheduling issue that led to the delayed certification, prompting officials to shut down the facility for a few days this week.

“We have an exhibitor license and are not supposed to be open until certification is finalized and we want to honor this regulation” Health said WIBX 950 earlier this week. “All of our animal care staff are on the ground and the animals are doing well,” she said.

Heath says that going forward, certification will be required every three years.

The Utica Zoo will reopen to visitors at 10 a.m. Friday morning, she said.

If you’re not lucky enough to make it to the zoo this weekend, their annual Spooktacular is just around the corner to celebrate Halloween. It takes place on October 22 and 23, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on both days. The event features candy stations, food trucks, vendors, live entertainment, animal rides, and the Twisted Fairy Tail Trail.

While the Spooktacular event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., zoo officials say the zoo itself will be open until 4:30 p.m. each of those days.
