July 7, 1981. Two remarkable entities were born on this date. Completely disconnected from each other and almost 1,600 km apart.
These two entities are former Indian captains Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the country’s leading IT company, Infosys.
Dhoni was born in Ranchi and went on to become India’s most successful cricket captain, well, arguably. Infosys, on the other hand, was founded on the same day in Pune, which has grown into a billion dollar company and one of the dynamic symbols of India’s growth story.
Dhoni and Infosys: Humble Beginnings
Infosys is now a NYSE-listed global IT consulting and services company with more than 239,000 employees. From a capital of $250, Infosys has grown into a $12.77 billion company with a market capitalization of approximately $41.14 billion.
Called a legend by the legends of the game, the Jharkhand boy’s exceptional leadership qualities turned him into a cricketing phenomenon. Known for being supportive of his players and his instincts, Dhoni has gone from being a small town boy to becoming the idol of Indian cricket.
In 39 years, Infosys has catalyzed some of the major changes that led to the emergence of India as a global destination for software services talent. Infosys has become the first Indian IT company to be listed on NASDAQ. The Infosys employee stock option program created some of India’s first employee millionaires.
MS Dhoni, the former Kharagpur TTE Railway Station, has given Ranchi a place on the cricket map. “Mahi”, his nickname, broke dozens of records during the 16 years of his international career.
Both Dhoni and Infosys have come a long way to where they are now, and it remains to be seen what the future holds for outstanding wonders.
